Bicycle wheel with KERS system
At the environmental conference in Copenhagen, SENSEable City Lab engineers at MIT showed a curious development: the “intelligent” drive for the bicycle wheel, the Copenhagen Wheel , which turns any bicycle into a real mobile gadget with cheap electronics.
First, a small electric motor and a charger were inserted into the wheel to it. In contrast to the primitive charger, which generates current from any rotation of the wheel, this one is activated only when braking, that is, it does not complicate driving at all. A simple sensor measures the pressure from the circuit to the plug and, accordingly, the effort of the cyclist. If the pressure is higher than usual, the turbo mode automatically turns on and the engine adds thrust (for example, on a steep rise or during acceleration after a traffic light). This system completely repeats the technology KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) from Formula 1.
Secondly, the iPhone comes with the wheel, which allows you to establish a direct connection to the bicycle via Bluetooth via headphones and to find out the speed, direction of travel, distance traveled while driving. The program monitors the weather forecast for your coordinates, checks traffic jams on the way and reports about the appearance of friends nearby (obviously, with the same bikes).
