Sun and IBM release servers for Web 3.0

Sun Microsystems and IBM announced the release of new servers specifically designed to serve the new generation of web services.

Sun's ultra-fast video server is designed to process video streams in real time: its 320 Gbps capacity. The new IBM machine based on Cell processors (such as in the PlayStation 3) is designed to “host” multiplayer online 3D games. On one server can get "registration" hundreds of thousands of virtual characters.

The cost of both servers starts from a few hundred thousand dollars. The very fact of the appearance of these specialized devices speaks of the advent of a new era of “specialized computing,” said Bernard Meverson, lead engineer of the IBM Systems and Technology Group.

According to experts, today's microprocessors rested on the development of many cores on a single chip. From this point of view, the Cell microprocessor and its revolutionary architecture can not but rejoice. Thus, engineers can return to the issue of hardware architectures. The release of new mainframes can just mean such a turn of events towards variations in hardware architectures after many years of monotonous stagnation.
