Approved standard for "big blocks" for hard drives.

IDEMA has published a standard on LBD (Long Block Data) . Work on the standard was started in 2000, with the aim of increasing the length of data blocks by from 512 bytes to 4096 bytes. Such a change was periodically suggested by hard disk manufacturers.

The new standard will give many advantages. Of the most obvious, this is an increase in reliability and an increase in the speed of data transfer. In addition, some manufacturers have announced a possible increase in reliability by 10 times, but the increase in production will be somewhat less. Improvements also include less time to generate and more efficient data transfer by reducing the overhead of access to the data block.
