Russian users of pirated Windows XP will receive automatic notifications

Today came a press release from Microsoft, which states that all users of pirated XP will be asked to install an OS authentication tool.

The current version of WGA Notifications was launched around the world about six months ago. Unlike previous versions of this program, this implementation does not provide for a limited functionality mode for detected pirated copies: only a notification and subsequent gentle reminders of the problem. This is especially important for Russia, in which a significant number of users have still not switched to licensed software and continues to use pirated versions of Windows XP installed by unscrupulous vendors in the past, without realizing both the fact of using an unlicensed system and the risks they are subject to this. Our task is not to punish all users of pirated software in Russia, but to inform them about the problem and facilitate making an informed decision about how to switch to the licensed version.

When you receive a notification that the installed version of Windows XP is unlicensed, the user receives comprehensive information about what options exist for purchasing a licensed operating system or legalization solutions. At the same time, the process of their acquisition, specially adapted for Russia in cooperation with local partners, provides a simple ordering mechanism via the Internet, convenient payment options and delivery throughout Russia.

Windows XP Internet users with the automatic update update feature enabled will start receiving the WGA Notifications installation module starting December 9, 2009. The process will be graded and will take several months until all systems are fully covered.
Installation of the WGA Notifications update is voluntary and is carried out only when the user accepts the license agreement. The WGA Notifications authentication process does not collect any data that could be used to identify or contact a user.

In general, judging by the press release, nothing terrible is waiting for users. At least no one will limit the functionality, but will only remind and forcibly change the background of the desktop. The only question is, how long will it last and will Windows not finally block, say, a month after three reminders?
