MIT RED BALLOON TEAM took less than 9 hours to win the grand prize of $ 40,000 in the DARPA competition . They were the first to report the exact coordinates of all 10 red balls launched throughout the US using a viral campaign. So, everyone who reported the location of the ball was entitled to a prize of $ 2000. In this case, a smaller prize was received by a person who brought a friend with the correct data. This allowed to attract a large number of people to search.
Competitions were organized by DARPA in honor of the 40th anniversary of ARPANET to study speed of information dissemination in social networks.
