It's no secret that twitter is good because you can read about something big in a small amount of text. This is certainly good, but when you need to study the subject thoroughly and from all points of view, this approach does not help, because it does not always reveal the opinion of even the author of the tweet.
That is, I want to read really big and interesting texts, but is it so convenient? Of course not, absolutely not convenient.
Why? I would like to know the answer to such a question. In fact, there are quite a few reasons, but they are all secondary. A couple, perhaps I will name:
1. Registration of the article (width and color of text and pages, advertising, breakdown of text by paragraphs, etc.)
2. Scrolling (yes, ordinary scrolling, which forces you to switch attention to the mouse)
It is the hardest to
deal with the design,
ZakharS has already paid attention to
this (
Fast reading and screen width ).
A “dirty hack” with page styles turned off is certainly not bad, but I would like something more interesting. Therefore, we consider several Firefox add-ons designed to facilitate the reading process.
Face change
-
eReader . Thought like a book reader in Firefox. At the moment, forgotten, although he had a sufficiently developed capabilities. (works with older versions of Firefox).
-
Read Easily . Adds a button and a hotkey to quickly turn off styles. (works with older versions of Firefox).
-
Textise . Creates text versions of the page being viewed. Unfortunately, it works rather slowly and adds extra text.
-
Blank Your Monitor + Easy Reading 1.9 BYM : Changes the color scheme to a darker to “save” energy (controversial statement). (experimental addition). Similar functionality has a script for
greasemonkey "
Tired Eyes ", which when pressed F2 includes the mode "white text on a black background." There are several bookmarklets with similar capabilities. I like “Night” the most - “Turns off the light in the browser” from
this page.

')
-
Accessibar Adds a panel to change various text options (font, background color) + can speak English text (works with old versions of Firefox).
-
Readability is a simple tool that makes reading on the Internet easier by removing unnecessary blocks from a page, changing the page style to a more readable one. There are several presets. Also available as a bookmarklet, which can be downloaded and configured from the
developers page .
Upd: Video-man (eng) .

-
TidyRead has a functionality similar to the previous one, but unlike it can automatically change page styles based on trusted lists. The advantages should also be attributed to the fact that the extension accurately enough highlights the main text and graphics of the article.
Upd: Video-man (eng) .

"Auto show" text
(something similar is often used in speed reading simulators)
-
RSVP Reader . Promises acceleration by 3.5 times due to fast scrolling of the text in a special panel on top.
Upd: Video-man (eng) .
-
SpeedReader! Similarly, only reading is done in a separate window. (works with older versions of Firefox).
This is probably all the add-ons that are designed specifically to improve the quality of reading in firefox. However, there is a workaround, such as using the
Dafizilla ViewSourceWith extension , by configuring the opening of the source code in a “real” Fbreader type reader (the method does not work with all readers).

You also need to mention the script for greasemonkey
Page Width Resizer (adds transparent borders, moving which you can change the width of the page), extensions
Default FullZoom Level (can auto-
adjust the size of text and images to fit in the Firefox window, in width; netbook owners) and
Link Queue & Preview Sidebar (useful for widescreen owners; preview full width links and save a quick reading list).
Sort and save the reading list for help later extensions
Read It Later (reading list "for later" with the ability to go offline) and
zotero (more than just a cataloger). Zotero is developing quite fast (<dreams> you could screw the mindmap to it ... </ dreams>), it can automatically download information about articles from various sources, add via ISBN, DOI and PMID, and also import full texts of articles from various search engines scientific information (Sciencedirect, Scopus and others). For
zotero , additional extensions already exist, such as
Zotero bibliography Locale Switcher (allows you to change the export language of the bibliography) and
Zotero Scholar Citations (import the citation index from Google Scholar;
Upd: more
info here .).
The mouse can "enhance" the addition of
Grab and Drag , using Acrobat style scrolling.
Upd: There is also an
Autoscroll bookmarklet, with adjustable scrolling speed.
Personally, I often use Tired Eyes (for small texts), TidyRead (for large texts), and a reader, through Dafizilla ViewSourceWith, for really big articles.
Finally, I advise you to use the compiz "Negative" and "Color filter" add-ons to increase readability in any application. And still calm music, for example
such .
Upd1: If you did not find the right add-on in the article, you can pay attention to the greasemonkey add-on -
Greasefire , which shows all the scripts available for the current page. Such scripts can significantly improve the style of the page and change the functionality of the page, for example,
Jakkers Google Reader , which helps to increase the usable space (again netbooks) and view full texts directly in Google Reader without switching to other pages.

Or, for example, Google search results can be improved (even to remove sending data to Google, for those who are particularly worried) using the
GoogleMonkeyR script
.
The
Stylish add-on can also visually change page styles. The search capability is built in by default in addition.
There are quite a few add-ons, so if you want to test everything, use Firefox test profiles to prevent additional “bonuses” due to possible incompatibility.
Upd2: If you need to preview links without switching to other pages,
Interclue is convenient, which, unlike add-ons like
CoolPreviews, can extract the main text of the article without formatting (also estimate file size, viewing images, pdf, youtube, etc .; it is convenient when article link or link to comments, as well as when checking your own links; font size and other parameters are easily adjustable);
Video Mans (Deutsch) .

Upd3: Still, I mention the
epubReader extension
for Firefox - reading books in ePub format from the browser . Initially, I did not include this extension as I did not come across such a format, but according to the
article I mentioned, the format is very popular “in the West”. This extension is more than enough to appreciate the book (reading fiction in Firefox is not for me).
