In the United States developed a system for duplicating GPS

In the US, systems are being developed that can replace GPS if necessary. The program for the development of Protected Ground Navigation is being commissioned by the US Department of Defense Advanced Development Agency. As a replacement for signals from GPS satellites, television broadcasts and the transmission of information over cellular networks are considered.

The work of GPS is based on the reception of signals from several satellites that are located in Earth orbit with special devices. By the time of the signal from the satellite to the receiver is set its location. However, signals from satellites may not pass in conditions of dense urban development and inside buildings. Problems with reception may also occur due to interference.

The development of a spare navigation system involved the company Boeing Phantom Works, located in Missouri (USA). According to project manager Bart Farrell, television broadcasts from terrestrial transmitters with a relatively strong signal can also be used as signals from GPS satellites. In addition, such signal sources as cell towers, communications satellites, and other navigation satellite systems are being considered: the Russian GLONASS and the European Galileo.

To develop a replacement GPS, Boeing collaborates with Rosom, a company located in Silicon Valley. The company develops positioning systems that use signals from television repeaters. The first task of the project - the creation of secure ground navigation - is to determine the availability of signals and their applicability in this system. If the results obtained in the first stage are positive, then the specialists will start creating receivers that can automatically determine the most acceptable signal for use, reports New Scientist.
