ICQ will be able to communicate with Gtalk users

As it became known to Vebplanet, over the next 6-12 months, the ICQ client will support interaction with Gtalk users. Galia Resnick, regional business manager of ICQ, reported this to the Vebplaneta correspondent at the celebration of the 10th anniversary of ICQ.

The fact that ICQ is working to integrate with Gtalk, it became known at the conference "Internet and Business", however, the specific dates for the introduction of interaction between the networks of ICQ and Gtalk were not previously announced.
According to Petr Didenko, the host of the “Real-Time Internet Communications” blog, there is nothing surprising in establishing such an interaction: “I had no doubt that the relevant work had to start. The question is how companies integrate one open-standards network (Gtalk) and the ICQ network, whose communication standard is closed. In particular, it is of interest to ask whether the standard will open - why not? I do not see any obstacles to this right now. ” In the future, Didenko develops his idea, talking about the benefits that AOL / ICQ can bring about this development: “Publishing the standard would give ICQ additional opportunities, since this network, which has only a few percent of the market in the US, should be more than all others interested in that its users can communicate with everyone, and not just with ICQ users. This would strengthen the position of Mirabilis in the market, especially if it takes such a step (the publication of the standard and, perhaps, open inter-server interaction) is the first among the leaders of the IM market. ”
In favor of the possibility of such a scenario, the fact that Galia Reznik does not see any interference with ICQ business in alternative clients speaks: according to her, the number of users of alternative clients grows much slower than the number of people using standard versions of software from ICQ and its local partners .
However, even if the ICQ protocol is never opened, users will be able to communicate with subscribers who use Jabber-based instant messaging services. On the possibility of this, the Rambler-ICQ project manager Alexey Sadonov says: “I think that this (compatibility with Jabber - Webplanet) should be expected: if interaction with Gtalk is realized, then I don’t see any technical problems with working with any other Jabber server ".
When asked about the speed with which English-speaking clients of ICQ will be located in the future, Sadonov answered that the Russian side wants the Russian-speaking client program to come out simultaneously with the English version.
The introduction of interaction between the Gtalk client and ICQ can greatly change the balance of power among instant messaging services, where the tendency of market participants to alliances has recently been noted. At the same time, and most importantly, the very existence of IM networks based on closed protocols is endangered.
