Google abandons Gears in favor of HTML5

Publisher readwriteweb.com states that Google has finally decided to abandon the development of Gears in favor of the use and further development of HTML5 in their products. It’s possible that in future versions of the browser and Chrome OS, Google will include more and more new features from the HTML5 drafts in an intensive way as a replacement for its Gears mechanism. Even in spite of the fact that specifications will be far from the finished form.



The reason for abandoning its own development is simple - almost all the Gears functionality is now available anyway through the HTML5 specifications: geolocation, data storage, and even files.



The article provides a comment from an unnamed Google employee who said that Gears support will be extended to those resources that currently use it.
