Amnesty for pirates from Altium

Each company is looking for its own ways of countering piracy, and more and more often these measures go beyond the usual “keep and not let go”. I recently wrote about how Adobe allows some categories of “pirates” to replace a suspended prison sentence and a part of the fine with public works in a charitable foundation .

There are other options. Altium (supplier of computer-aided design of electronic devices) recently announced a program of amnesty for users of unlicensed software. Until the end of 2009, you can legalize all illegal copies of P-CAD and Altium Designer by purchasing the latest version of the Altium Designer package for 189 thousand rubles (this figure, by the way, is the result of the previous step towards the market when the price was reduced almost 3 times at the beginning of of the year). This means that Altium will not make any claims to those who use the amnesty regarding the illegal use of its products in the past.

Offhand, we can assume that the campaign can be quite successful: for Altium, which will receive its revenues, and for user companies that can get rid of the risk of prosecution. After all, there are quite a few companies that started a business “on the knee,” without any initial investment, which is why they started using pirated software. However, many of them have succeeded and now they could well afford legal software.

To encourage such users, Altium offers each participant an official certificate that allows them to use one P-CAD license for one year for each Altium Designer license purchased. This, for example, will allow you to convert and transfer all your projects and developments from P-CAD to Altium Designer with the help of free tools and take a one-day course on translation of developed projects from one program to another, as well as take part in webinars on these issues. In addition, the above-mentioned cost includes an update of versions (Software Assurance), during the year the user will receive all new versions and updates free of charge.

Accordingly, the question is: what do you think, how effective are such campaigns in amnesty for unlicensed software? What percentage of users of pirated versions of Altium manage to convince to switch to legal software (now the company itself estimates the share of pirated products at 2/3 of all installed packages)?
