Windows Home Server is a conceptually important part of the picture of the future that Microsoft has painted for us. For the Redmond giant, it is critically important to make home servers and their “OS” on them the same usual accessory in the house, like a TV and a phone. The new platform will be a convenient environment for the deployment in the society of fundamentally new next-generation services, such as lifeblogging.
But how to explain to people now that they
really need home servers? How to draw in the mass consciousness the desired picture of the future? This is not an easy task. Moreover, right now the home server is not able to do much, except for backup.
The best journalists work to show in detail what it is actually needed for: see the
review and
dozens of screenshots of the recently released April 2007 Community Technical Preview.
Windows Home Server is a system for installing on home servers such as Hewlett-Packard MediaSmart Server.

Installing the software takes you in seven easy steps.

Then you need to enter the registration number. If this is not done, the program will work only 30 days.

In the following steps, the computer name is entered and the master password is set. After that, the server contacts the update center and boosts the necessary modules, including new drivers, security updates, software components, etc.

In the server settings there are icons for viewing the list of connected computers and hard drives, shared folders.

In account management, it is indicated which of the users can be allowed to connect to the server remotely. The admin also sets how complex user passwords should be.

By default, all NTFS partitions are automatically backed up. The system recognizes temporary files and does not add them to the archive.

Backup is carried out on schedule.

Folders with music, videos and photos are created automatically. They can be easily shared - then other devices, such as an Xbox 360 game console, can access the content.

Any home server can be "opened to the world" via the Internet. The domain name is automatically registered with the Windows Live Registration Service. Remote access to the site is possible only with a password, and the password must be of the strongest level of burglary.
