Because My work is a bit related to VoIP, I decided to create a small series of articles on FXS gateways
Before that, having run through the search did not find such articles, well, if not, we’ll do it.
Moreover, those who are “not in the subject” will be interested, and those who are “in the subject” will have something to add in the comments, while the era of VoIP has already arrived.
So today I will talk about the
MediaPack-202 FXoc gateway by Audiocodes.
Q: What is a FXS gateway and what is it for?
A: FXS (Foreign Exchange Subscriber) - analog voice interface (RJ-11 connector) for connecting a two-wire PSTN line to a telephony device. In the simplest case - a wall telephone jack.

Careful, a lot of text!AudioCodes is one of the leading manufacturers of equipment and software for building VoIP networks. The main activities of the company are the development of the element base, software and hardware systems, as well as extensive research activities. The most well-known AudioCodes developments are the G.723.1 voice codec and VoIPerfect software hardware platform. The company was founded in 1993 and today has sold about 12 million VoIP ports from AudioCodes. A wide range of high-tech, reliable, cost-effective equipment company AudioCodes can be successfully applied in the construction of operator and corporate networks of VoIP. Komptek has 2 AudioCodes equipment lines: Mediant digital VoIP gateways and MediaPack analog VoIP gateways. Company information taken from
www.comptek.ruGateways mp202 come in 2 types:
mp202A (mp202B is written in the link to the picture, but this is not true):

mp202B:

What is the difference between A and B? Actually nothing, they have exactly the same firmware, just A older than B. (I personally liked A more because of their more compact size - almost 2 times less than B).
Main characteristics:
Interfaces :
- Analog ports - 2 ports
- Ethernet - 2 10/100 Base-T interfaces, RJ45 connector. WAN and LAN
Codecs :
- G.711A-law / U-law
- G.726A / B
- G.729
- G.723.1 (low / high - bitrate)
Echo compensation :
Also :
- Dynamic Programmable Jitter Buffer
- Vlan tagging
- Diffserv
In fact, the list of characteristics is huge and you can find it, for example, here:
cisco-systems.uaprom.netNetwork features:
- PPPoE
- Vlan
- PPTP
- PPTP inside PPTP
- L2TP
- IPIP
- GRE
Network details can be entered as pens, and obtained by dhcp.
Yes, by the way, setting up network details is far from being limited to such a set as: ip, dns, gatway.
Here it is possible to select the necessary one with mtu and pens and change the mac.

More qualitatively, this picture can be found here:
http://savepic.org/30330.jpgThe MP-202 is a great 2-port gateway that works over both UDP and TCP and TLS protocols.
It has a wild bunch of settings, it seems to me that you can configure everything on it that your heart desires (regarding voip telephony and the fact that this is still an fxs gateway).
Convenient construction dialplan, extremely simple and at the same time very capacious.
Here is an example:
00x|01|02|03|04|05x|06x|07x|09|2[3-5]xxxx|[4-6]xxxxx|80xxxxxxxxx|81xxxxxxxxxx.|8[3-9]xxxxxxxxx
You can set up speed dialing, i.e. I dial 001 and get on the number 73522666666 - for example.
Also, the creators have not forgotten about security:
- You can set access rules.
- Port Forwarding
- Specify DMZ host.
- Port Triggers.
- Close access to certain resources.
- Security log
After reading what is described above, you guessed that this is not about the FXS gateway, but in combination - the router. Yes, you are absolutely right. In addition, this is a very good router (especially considering that he can QoS).
Accordingly, you can customize the routing.
Of the nice additions are available:

- Several types of remote access (picture above)
- save / restore config.
- Reset settings to default (programmatically).
- Make a simple network diagnostics (ping, traceroute).
- Change the settings of access ports, for example, it is possible to change the HTTP port from 80 to any, also telnet and https.
- Specify log sizes: system and security.
- Management by snmp.
- Scheduler.
- npt-client. (possibly ntp-server for lan-clients, but I did not try, for wan-clients it doesn’t work).
- You can upload certificates.
- Create users with different rights.
- Configuring network objects - allows you to apply security rules to the PART of the network
- It is possible to use dynamic DNS, unfortunately only one provider dyndns.org.
- It is possible to make dns records yourself, very convenient if you want google.ru to open instead of ya.ru =)
I really like this thing for its “ALL-MOST IMPORTANT”.
It seems to me that if you think about what you want, then you want this particular device;)
PS: if you like this review, then I can still do reviews:
- Linksys spa2102
- Audiocodes MediaPack-124
- Dlink-dvg5004s, 5008s, 2032s. - 3 together, because from the inside they are almost the same, the difference in the number of ports
So I didn’t write something about faxes, and even work with dial-up (yes, it’s still in the outback, and not only in some places as a type of access to specific resources).
I can assure you that it works with a bang, I have no problems with this device at all, and the faxes work fine and the dial-up works (please note that the client is not the only one, and I myself did the tests).
There is a set of specific settings for this happiness, such as Fax Transport Mode, Max Rate, Max Buffer, Modem Transport Mode, Fax / Modem Bypass Codec.
In fact, I tried to recall the problems I had with this device - I did not master it, i.e. There were once with Ineta brakes, but it was a squash party - sent back.
