California adopts new energy standards for televisions

On November 18, 2009, the California Energy Commission ( California Energy Commission ) adopted an energy efficiency standard for televisions, which comes into force on January 1, 2011.

Regardless of technology, all new TVs sold in California should consume 33% less energy by 2011, and 49% by 2013. The standard only applies to televisions with an area of less than 1,400 square inches (with a diagonal of less than 58 inches). For example, a 42-inch screen should consume up to 183 watts by 2011 and up to 115 watts by 2013.

The commission assumes that in 10 years the new rules will save $ 8.1 billion on electricity.
