Science fiction does not keep up with progress

A few words in continuation of the topic β€œ Bruce Sterling noticed Avatar Machine ”, which is an excellent example of how science fiction should fulfill its function - the prediction and direction of scientific and technological progress. Now she just does not keep up with him and such examples are very rare exceptions.

Recently, PC Pro magazine has compiled a selection of NF-works that most influenced the development of science and technology.

Jules Verne described dozens of devices, one hundred years ahead of time. They gave inspiration to scientists and designers who read these books in their childhood. NASA engineers were brought up on the fantastic series Star Trek and are now trying to bring to life the ion engine seen there (that is, the time lag between prediction and implementation has decreased several times). But what next?

Since the days of β€œ Snow avalanche ” (1992), not a single NF-product has achieved a significant impact on the computer industry, PC Pro reports. Writer Charles Shtross says that he began writing a science fiction novel in 2005 and made some predictions that after ten years they would either laugh at everyone or they would come true. β€œAnd you know what is strangest? Most of them have already become a reality by 2009, ”says Stross.

Actually, Bruce Sterling himself spoke about the same, that is, about the death of futurology, in his latest forecast three years ago.
