Bruce Sterling notices Avatar Machine

The cyberpunk classic wrote in his blog about the Avatar Machine project, which was discussed at Habré six months ago. Bruce Sterling, along with William Gibson, worked on the subject of augmented reality in their works, they foresaw the emergence of such devices. Now these fantasies come true.

As you know, the idea of Avatar Machine is gorgeous and simple: you wear a virtual reality helmet, go straight out in it - and you can see your avatar walking around the city from the side.

Bruce Sterling in his blog quotes the author of the project Avatar Machine, 27-year-old English computer designer Mark Owens, who talks about the social significance of this concept. The man in the helmet sees himself in a different light and changes his behavior. That is, in the real world, a person begins to behave as if in a computer game.

You can imagine what will happen when introducing multiplayer. Owners of VR helmets will be able to meet on the street and see each other's avatars. Offline stores will begin to accept virtual currency for payment. You can even go to the cinema in the woods, if you pay for viewing from a helmet wirelessly.

The surrounding reality can also be adjusted to your taste. Many volunteer designers will be ready to make the world more beautiful through individual “skins”: for example, in the fall you can improve the overall contrast and color saturation, remove dirt from the roads, reduce the volume of car horns, etc. Surely, many such artistic skins will appear on the Internet both for Moscow and other cities, and skins from Artemy Lebedev will be sold for money.

Over time, it may turn out that going out without a helmet on the street will become just disgusting and unbearable (as now many people cannot go out without a player and background music).
