But there was one problem with this program ... It worked only in the USA.
Probably, licenses for maps purchased by Google did not allow to use navigation in other countries.
(in the US, Google already has its cards ;-))

Initial requirements:
1. HTC Dream or HTC Magic
2. Firmware based on Android 1.6 (Donut) (tested on the latest version of the cyanogen 4.2.5 build)
3. Third-party recovery such as Amon's or Cyanogen (there is on the same XDA for different phone models)
4. Brains
5. Here is this file
What need to do:
1. Download this file here (for Cyanogen assemblies) Mirror on the People
2. Put it in the root of the SD card
3. Reboot to recovery (when loading, press Home + Turn on)
3. Select the chose update.zip item (if there is no such item, rename the file to update.zip)
4. Select update_navigation.zip
5. Apply update (for this you need to confirm the choice by pressing the Home button)
6. Restart the phone
7. Click Settings-Speech Synthesis-Install Voice Data or download Speech Synthesis Data from the market.
8. Run Maps
9. Choose Directions
10. Indicate (using points on the map) 2 any addresses in the United States and click Go-
As a result, the menu item Navigate should appear in the menu.
11. Download NavLauncher from the market
12. Run this program, enter the desired address
and voila, you have navigation in your city (if of course it is in Google maps ;-))
Proven for yourself, works well.
Among the shortcomings, voice guidance is only in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish. Russian may appear in the next versions of Speech Synthesis ...

UPD: I drove from Obolon to Lukyanovka (Kiev, Ukraine). Thank you google, I drew the route well and changed it twice when I did not go there. It can work in the background, and display only voice prompts. The navigation mode on satellite photography is especially pleasant.
A slight inconvenience is to constantly say turn left on ... but it takes the names of the streets from google maps in Russian, and so far it’s impossible to synthesize their names :-) but where it is clear on the map and by the distance said (200 meters turn left on. ....)
We are waiting for the next hacks, which will allow to cache cards ...
UPD2: The people continued to patch the maps file, now this hack is available much easier: download this archive , run the appropriate batch file (depending on whether you have a rooted phone or not). When he asks to press any key, wait for the phone to load. And, yes, I forgot to say, when you connect your phone to your computer, USB debugging in the phone settings should be turned on. And voila, everything should work In addition, now you can start navigating from the maps themselves - there is no need for an external application
