Safari 4.0.3 vs 4.0.4

Yesterday, Apple introduced a new release of its Safari web browser. And I, as a loyal user, climbed onto the site to download the update. The first thing that catches the eye from a short list of changes is the improved JavaScript performance. I had the idea to measure and compare this very performance compared to the current, before installation, version of the navigator. What came out of it now and find out.

First of all, you need to find a good "check". The Google search engine for the keywords “web browser benchmark test” was the first to publish a test called Peacekeeper . To find out the criteria for which measurements are taken had to climb into the FAQ . On the question of what it measures, the answer is approximately as follows:

Peacekeeper measures the performance of your navigator by testing the performance of its JavaScript. JavaScript is a widespread programming language that is used on modern web sites to implement such functionality as animation, navigation, forms, and so on.

Now, about what he does NOT measure:

Peacekeeper only tests JavaScript performance. It does not measure other navigator features, including security features. It does not check for compliance with W3C standards and does not test external components, such as Flash. Internet speed is also not measured, exactly as it does not affect the passing of the test.

Fine. That is necessary. First, test the existing Safari 4.0.3. For the purity of the experiment I will close all the tabs and additional navigator windows. I note that the time for passing the test took me about 5 minutes. The results on the screen:

After the test, I was surprised that my results strongly diverged from those obtained by other users. The answer to this question was also found in the FAQ:
In addition to the browser itself, the most significant factor affecting the rating is the type of your processor. The power of a video card also has an effect, but it is insignificant and manifests itself only in cases when a weak graphics adapter is used or there are no drivers for it in the system. It is unacceptable to run demanding applications during the test. Screen resolution and browser window size also affect the score. Minimizing the dough window is not allowed. Some other factors are minor. Internet connection speed and network delays do not affect the passing of the test.

All conditions are respected by me. Moreover, I generally moved away from the computer during the test. Iron Macmini3.1, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz.

It is the turn of the new version. I install the update and reboot. Subjectively, I don’t see any speed difference in the first minutes. Now check what the test says. Results:

The overall rate is lower than the previous version. What kind of performance was mentioned in the list of changes is not clear to me or the test. Perhaps on your hardware, dear friends, this test will show other indicators. Despite the test results, JavaScript processing speed is far from a weak point of this web browser. He still remains one of the fastest.
