Pro X Lunar Prize, Million Dollars, Halloween and John Carmack
The next stage of the X-Lunar Prize is over. The $ 1,000,000 prize will be paid on November 5th to Masten Space Systems, which won the tender for the construction of a lunar landing module. The competition consisted of two stages - in the first one it was necessary to raise the module to a certain height, to make a flight to the landing pad lasting at least 90 seconds and land it. Then the module had to fly back. Both flights were to take place within 2.5 hours (including all preparations, etc.). The second stage is more complicated - the flight must be for at least 180 seconds and landing on the platform, imitating the surface of the moon - with boulders and slides. Such a flight emulates in sufficient detail the descent from the lunar orbit to the surface. The ship Masten is called Zoe (:-), Xoie), this is an improved version of their first ship named Zombies. Considering that due to breakdowns and a small fire, Zoe flew on October 30 instead of the planned 28th, it would be more fun if Zombies flew - the very name for the Halloween flight.
Here is a record of the victorious flight - imagine the thoughts of drivers passing by the car! ("All your base are belong to us" :-))
It would seem, what does John Cormac? ')
All this time, quite a lot (over 20) companies are fighting for the main prize, but so far two of them are the most successful - Maston and Armadillo. Both were successful in the first and second stages. What allowed Masten to get the first prize? Sheer trifle - landing point. They ensured (on the occasion of, or thanks to more advanced equipment) the accuracy of landing 19 cm, and Armadillo could show only 87-centimeter accuracy. This difference looks more impressive in Imperial values - just two feet the difference between victory and second place.
But all this does not explain how does John, where is it? And everything is very simple. John created the Armadillo company. Such people of our world is not enough. And precisely such people will take us into space.
