A new startup offers its users a new way to surf the web: customizable shortcuts to websites with keywords.
The idea invented by
OpenDNS will allow people to create keywords to designate their favorite sites. That is, you can associate the address of the site with any word, and later, by typing this word in the address bar, get to that very site.
To use the OpenDNS service, you need to create an account and configure the computer to use the service.
OpenDNS replaces the current domain names of the servers used by computers to translate addresses, for example, habrahabr.ru into numeric addresses, for example 85.249.142.115. The company says that this technology increases the speed of access to web pages, and also automatically corrects domain names (ie, * .cmo to * .com) and blocks phishing sites. OpenDNS collaborates with Yahoo - pages with ads of the latter are displayed on erroneous (non-existent) domains.

The idea of keywords redirecting to websites is not new at all. RealNames tried to do this business in collaboration with Microsoft, but closed in 2002 after losing tens of millions of dollars.
Of course, it is now possible to add keywords to browsers: for Firefox, there is even a special
OpenBook plugin that adds flexible keyword settings. However, similar functionality can be achieved with
standard tools in Opera.
In other words, experienced Internet users have many options for adding keywords to sites. But the advantage of OpenDNS is that its work does not need a special browser with plug-in support - the system will work even on Internet Explorer, even on Safari. OpenDNS can even be used on mobile devices - it all depends on your
settings , or on the settings of your company's system administrator, or your university.
