3G networks in Russia

Maybe the third generation networks will finally appear in Russia? Let me remind you that a competition has recently been held between the largest poerators of the Russian Federation.

On Friday it became known that the licenses for the provision of cellular services of the third generation were received by the operators of the “big three” - Mobile TeleSystems OJSC (MTS), VimpelCom OJSC (Beeline trademark) and Megafon OJSC. (It is worth noting, however, that the megaphone has been developing 3G networks in St. Petersburg since 2001).

Also, the New Telephone Company (Vladivostok), Chelyabinsk Cellular Communications LLC (part of the Swedish Tele2 holding) and Avrora-Telecom LLC (Moscow) were admitted to the competition for the right to obtain licenses for third-generation cellular communications.

3G networks imply a higher data transfer rate: 2 Mbps versus 384 Kbps (2.5G), and open up new possibilities, for example, access to the Internet at a higher speed or video calls.
