3G: First, the Internet and mail

How exactly will the “big three” of cellular operators manage the obtained 3G licenses? This question was partially answered today by MTS President Leonid Melamed. In his opinion, the most popular services in 3G networks will initially be Internet access and e-mail. Also non-voice services will be in demand, namely, video content transmission, online games, etc. In addition, Melamed noted, B2B services, for example, banking services, including non-cash payments, are promising for 3G networks.

Voice services, according to the head of MTS, will not go beyond 2G for a long time. But the company plans to offer subscribers, including mixed packages of 2G and 3G services. In this regard, one of the most important technical tasks is to provide reliable handover (automatic switching of the subscriber unit) between 2G and 3G networks.
