Almost all the devs useful tips begin with the words: “If you have something unnecessary ...” and further recommendations are given on how to turn this most unnecessary into something useful. In my case, I had a great desire to have a second monitor. Of the materials at hand, there was only an old Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 laptop, which was very sorry to give for the pennies that were offered for it. It turned out that the monitor of this laptop can easily be used as a secondary monitor using a network connection. For my purposes (programming, work with texts) the quality of this monitor is quite suitable. Since there is no network card in this laptop, I had to buy two USB Bluetooth 2.0 adapters.
With the help of a great and terrible google, the following software was downloaded: 1. MaxiVista ( www.maxivista.com ) - Shareware. Enough pleasant speed of work (using image compression, which turned out to be very useful with a very limited connection speed via bluetooth), a lot of additional options, an excellent interface. Of the minuses - paid. :( You can search for the free version of MaxiVista SE 2 , but the old one and with the restriction on the resolution on the secondary monitor 640x480 (which by modern standards is quite a tear). 2. ZoneScreen ( www.zoneos.com/zonescreen.htm ) - Freeware, The speed is significantly lower, because no compression is used. But the freebie and tiny size distribution is only 50kB.
Actually below is a visual demonstration of such use of a laptop (photo from ZoneScreen website):
Now the old laptop can serve a couple more years. I think many habrovchan accumulated old laptops that are a pity to throw out, but which can be useful as a second monitor.
UPD1. In the comments, people suggest that ZoneScreen (for now) is not compatible with Windows 7. UPD2. For Linux, the following software was downloaded: Distributed Multihead X aka XDMX ( off-site , wiki ).
