Half a billion in advertising: is it a lot or a little?

Apple on Tuesday published financial statements (Form 10-K ) and the exact amount spent on advertising in the 2009 fiscal year became known: $ 501 million.

Half a billion dollars seems like a big amount, but for Apple it's not that much. That is, it is clear that advertising costs are included in the price of the goods and we, the buyers, pay them. But the same Microsoft advertising budget is much more both in absolute and relative terms.
