Fast reading and screen width

I want to share one observation that I made in the process of speed reading training ( in this and that way).

The fact is that on modern monitors, especially wide ones, when you expand the window to full screen, you get a too wide area with text. Its pretty hard to cover. And one of the basic skills of speed reading is the widest possible field of view. In this case, too long lines are an obstacle - the eyes are forced to run very far left and right.

The habit of maximizing the window is apparently from the time of the first monitors with a resolution of 640x480, where very little text could fit. Now it is not necessary to do this at all. And on the standard 3: 4 screens, I think, you can also limit the width of the window.

By the way, in this case, the design of websites with a narrow text column and a lot of additional information on both edges becomes understandable. True, if there were clear margins around the edges, it would be even better, but advertising needs to be shown somewhere this could go against the plans of the author of the site who wants to fit the maximum information on the first screen without scrolling.

And finally, I highly recommend a tool to improve the readability of texts - Readability . The meaning of the following: you choose the design and size of fonts that you are more comfortable, then a script is generated, the call of which you can add to bookmarks. When reading sites littered with ads and a bunch of navigation elements, you simply click on this tab, and the script tries to select meaningful text from the page, discarding everything else. The text is made in accordance with your chosen style. In most cases, it works correctly. Try it - a very useful thing in the modern Internet.
