This release will be the biggest and the best ever release of Ubuntu Linux, and from the very beginning it is impressive with its installer, fast download, new graphic design and much more.
Meet perhaps the best operating system in the world - Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala”.
So what's new in Ubuntu 9.10? Let's take a visual overview of what you find inside ...
')
Installation in 6 steps
In Ubuntu 9.10, the installation process has been improved, contains less confusion and requires less clicks to achieve the final result.
Encryption
During installation, new options are also available, such as creating and encrypting a “home” partition.
File transfer
Migration Assistant , which allowed you to import data from Windows and other operating systems, was removed from the installation process. Perhaps this solution is somewhat strange, but you can still find these features in the main menu on the desktop.
New slide show
During the installation of Ubuntu, you can see the superb new slide show, reflecting the capabilities of the applications and functions of the operating system.
EXT4, Grub2, etc
Karmic Koala moves to the new file system by default.
Ext4 provides better performance and increases data security. It also guarantees the possibility of increasing disk space to one
exabyte .
Grub 2 is now used as a bootloader. This is a complete rewrite of Grub, which brought with it the best performance, functionality and automatic cleaner of the "dead" menu items.
Other updates:
Graphic design: a new splash screen, themes, wallpapers and icons
When you start the system, you will notice a new screen saver. Visually stunningly successful, it reflects the mood of Karmic Koala.
Login Manager (
GDM ) redrawn under the splash screen:
Karmic comes with 19 new desktop wallpapers:
Well, as well as a new default wallpaper:
The theme “Human Theme” changed colors from orange to brown:
The new “
Humanity ” icon set is used by default, replacing the outdated “
Human ”, and stylish icons appear in the notification area:
User Switch
The ability to shut down a session or computer using this applet is enhanced by some new icons that set your status in the
IM network.
Shutdown screen
Logout demonstrates this magnificent image to you, but it will not take long to observe, as the work is completed in the blink of an eye!
Software Center
One of the biggest innovations in Ubuntu is the Software Center, designed to find, install, and manage software. Select a category, find the desired application, click "Install." Done!
In later releases, it will turn into a real software store, replace
Synaptic , the update manager, and allow developers to sell their applications.
Empathy
Pidgin has been replaced by a
GNOME client called
Empathy . Visually, they are not very different, but Empathy looks weaker when it comes to graphic themes, protocol support, and more.
But on the other hand, it boasts full integration with the windowing environment, and also supports video and audio calls via
MSN .
Support for topics, detailed organization of your contacts, and even remote desktop integration through the use of Vino (GNOME Remote Access Desktop).
A
geolocation feature is available for
XMPP users.
Disk utility
It is worth mentioning about the addition to the distribution utility from the GNOME project for managing disks.
Akin
to Apple's disk utility, it allows you to monitor, create, delete, etc. disk partitions and arrays. With the help of pop-up windows you get messages about their health status.
Ubuntuone
How about a free two-gigabyte data store?
UbuntuOne comes with a distribution kit and, in fact, is a kind of analogue to the popular
Dropbox application. We transfer files to the UbuntuOne directory, synchronize and access from any other computer - anywhere, anytime!
For $ 10 per month, you can expand your disk space up to 50GB. This service also has its own icon in the system tray.
GNOME 2.28.1
I hate to read reviews of GNOME releases, because they rarely carry information about major changes.
This, in part, also applies to the latest version of GNOME (they significantly improved the Bluetooth module and for some reason removed the icons from some menus and buttons. You can turn them on again using
this instruction).
Everything else is still in place. Except
Ekiga . Ubuntu by default now without it.
Fast boot and faster shutdown
You’ve probably already heard, but now see for yourself: Ubuntu runs faster than ever before. Turns off even faster, usually in two seconds.
Network manager
NetworkManager touched on cosmetic changes, and now it boasts a cleaner and more user-friendly interface.
Indicator Applet
You will be pleased to know that Indicator-Applet now supports a fairly wide range of applications.
Pidgin, Empathy,
Gwibber ,
Evolution ,
Xmail ,
KMail and
Konversation are currently supported.
In the future, we plan to expand support for applications such as
Liferea ,
Claws Mail ,
KMess and
Kopete ,
Sylpheed and
Yarsssr .
Easy font installation
To install the font, you need to press just one button.
Until now, this process took a little longer and included copying fonts to a specific directory and manual recovery of the cache.
Firefox 3.5.3
Karmic comes with Firefox 3.5.3 as the default Internet browser.
Rhythmbox 12.5
Rhythmbox remained the default audio player in Ubuntu - and rightly so! He has a strict graphic design, it is quite lightweight (compared to competitors), and it works fine with the iPod.
Three main features compared to the previous release:
- The cover search is now carried out by discogs.com and MusicBrainz - replacing Amazon , which stopped working
- A click on the Rhythmbox status icon will now bring it up on the current desktop.
- Uploaded plug-in Coherence (UPNP) (plays the role of a media server)
System Cleaning (also known as the “Brush of Fate”)
Cleaning the system, as it should, is available in Karmic, but still remains one of the most dangerous applications for the end user.
The system cleaner will happily remove / erase / declare war on any application that has been manually installed (from the
.deb format), treating it as unused or unnecessary.
In the hands of someone who is careful, this is a great tool, but
Ubuntu Tweak provides much safer cleaners that don't kill the system.
Application sources
Quite a big convenience-driven innovation is add-apt-ppa support.
Not quite clear?
This means that you can simply add the
PPA repository and no longer worry about adding the key with which it is signed, now it happens automatically
Or add the PPA to the list of application sources using links. Note that this method will not retrieve the
GPG key, but you can use
this solution.
This is just the beginning.
Of course, this review is just a draft, including improvements, enhancements, and changes in Ubuntu 9.10; A hell of a lot of work also remained "under the hood."
