I bring to your attention the analyst of events and trends of the RuNet over the past three years.
Startups
The first thing that catches your eye is the rapid rise of the Vkontakte social network. The second place in terms of growth rate is the Russian video hosting service
RuTube , which was recently devoted to a wonderful
interview . Habrahabr in third place among the new projects of the past year. The slightly slowed growth in the popularity of Habr is due to its positioning on a rather narrow circle of people - IT specialists, while the target audience of “RuTube” and “In Contact” is the widest “layer” of Runet users.
Habrahabr and traditional news sites
The second graph shows how traffic from sites like Webplanet, Kompyulenta, and Dirty.ru decreases. This phenomenon certainly has many reasons, and one of them is the development of social networks.

News sites
On the graphs of many sites (especially news sites) one can observe a giant jump in visitors in September 2004. It was then that dramatic events occurred with the
seizure by terrorists of 1,100 hostages in the Beslan school. This surge of activity, to a greater or lesser extent, was reflected in almost all sites of the RuNet.
Another interesting trend of news sites is that with a steadily growing Internet, media attendance schedules do not grow. This means that their audience share is gradually decreasing. Obviously, advertisers are increasingly leaning towards social networks, and if the largest online publications do not take active steps, they risk
Search engines
The graphs of attendance of search engines in my opinion are a measure of the growth of Internet users. The growth curve "by eye" gives a feeling of a 20-30% increase in the number of Internet users per year.
It is also worth noting that on this graph it is noticeable how Yandex gives way to the first place of Mail.ru at the end of last year. This happened because of the more aggressive policy of Mail.ru in relation to users, when a company does whatever services it needs only to not let the user go from its portal; while Yandex leads a more loyal policy providing users with more opportunities to use non-Yandex-friendly services.
The only unexplained phenomenon remains the mysterious failure in the charts of all search engines in early 2006. This phenomenon affected only the Russian search engines, without affecting the main Western search engines. I would be grateful if you help to understand its cause.
Social, blogs
A rather interesting picture develops on the basis of blog services / social networks. Liveinternet is successfully evolving, a decrease in the number of page views is observed on the Diary.ru online diaries service, and
ya.ru is a domain owned by Yandex, recently
reoriented to a social network, is only gaining momentum. The Vkontakte social network is striking its growth rates: in just four months, the community of 300 thousand users has accounted for a third of Liveinternet blog traffic, which has been around for several years, from almost zero.
View vs RBC
And finally, a curious illustration of the changes that followed the changes in Mail.ru’s policy, when the largest Russian portal
refused to publish on its pages the news of the business newspaper
Look in favor of
RBC media holding. Attendance of the Look has dropped several times, while the increase in attendance of the RosBusinessConsulting site seems to be completely insignificant.
