Apple today
announced the completion of its open source project ZFS. The mailing list and repository will soon be deleted too.
ZFS (Zettabyte File System) is an advanced file system originally developed by
Sun Microsystems , which has been ported by Apple to Mac OS X and presented as an open source project available on
Mac OS Forge pages since 2007.
According to rumors, ZFS was supposed to become the default file system in Mac OS X "Leopard", but ultimately it appeared only in the form of a truncated version with read-only capabilities.
Apple continued to maintain an interest in ZFS, as evidenced in early descriptions of the OS developed by Snow Leopard Server, but all references to ZFS were soon removed from the site and support for this file system was not included in the Snow Leopard releases and Snow Leopard Server.
Later, several sources suggested that ZFS support in Snow Leopard did not take place due to licensing issues with the product. Recall that Sun chose to open the codes of its file system under a commercial
CDDL license , which created additional risks for Apple’s business. In April 2009, Sun was acquired by
Oracle Corporation , which in turn already has its “clone” of ZFS -
Btrfs - which puts the future fate first in question. In addition, ZFS has some open questions about patent infringements owned by
NetApp . All this could fall on the shoulders of Apple.

A company from Cupertino yesterday posted a vacancy for a file system engineer. However, the description included only requirements to support an existing project, as well as the development, support and implementation of future technologies from this area. This fact most likely indicates that the company is more likely to prefer its own solutions instead of chasing ZFS.
