Fast Charging Standard for Electric Vehicles

The organization SAE, which is engaged in automotive standards, in the coming days will vote for the adoption of a universal standard for recharging all models of electric vehicles and hybrid cars. The SAE J1772 standard (120/240 V) includes a charger for a lithium-ion battery and a five-pin connector through which electricity is transmitted and service information is removed from the car. The revision of SAE J1772 took two and a half years, and within a week it must finally be adopted. This was reported by representatives of General Motors, who head the relevant committee of SAE .

This is a standard for fast charging with a current up to 70 A. A five-minute charge is enough to drive 15-25 km. At the same time, electric cars can be charged through a regular outlet, but it will take a couple of hours. This option is suitable for a private garage, where the car can be left for the night.

It is expected that now all car manufacturers will support J1772 (unless Tesla may have problems because they use a proprietary system), and it will become an indispensable element at all "electric gas stations". In developed countries, legislation is being prepared by which connectors for recharging should be installed at each petrol station. In addition, negotiations are underway to install charging stations in the parking lots of the largest supermarket chains. Unlike gasoline gas stations, these sockets can be placed anywhere: in any parking lot, near offices, shops and kindergartens.
