Edsger W. Dijkstra (Edsger Wybe Dijkstra, 1930 - 2002) - one of the creators of modern programming. He was part of the team that wrote the compiler for the ALGOL 60 language. Dijkstra’s famous article “On the Harm of the GO TO Operator” (
Go To Statement Considered Harmful ), published in March 1968, marked the beginning of a structural approach to programming.
It was followed by the book
"Notes on Structured Programming" (Dal U., Dijkstra E., Hoor K. Structural Programming. - Moscow: "The World", 1975) and "The Discipline of Programming" (M .: Mir, 1978).
For more than four decades, Dijkstra remained one of those who determined the direction of the development of science and technology of programming. He enjoyed enormous prestige.
Dijkstra was a very orderly person and had a habit of carefully recording or typing, and then sending his correspondents his notes, small articles, comments, thoughts, reports about the trips. Such notes have accumulated more than 1,300.
The faculty of Computer Science at the University of Texas, where Dijkstra taught the last 18 years of his life, digitized this entire archive. Now
Dijkstra’s archive as PDF files, along with a number of other materials, including video and audio interviews with Dijkstra, are publicly available.
The originals of the manuscripts, diaries, correspondence, photographs of Dijkstra are located at the
Center for American History of the University of Texas .
