"Big Three" crush the 3G

According to the results of three today's competitions for the issuance of frequencies in the 2.1 GHz range for the third generation of cellular communications (3G), the winners were the operators of the “big three” cellular companies - Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), Vimpelcom (Beeline trademark), "Megaphone". In the first competition, with the best frequency selection (that is, the most cleared of military services), Megafon won, gaining the highest number of points - 560. MTS won the second competition - 559 points, the third - VimpelCom with 550 points. The rest of the participants didn’t get close to the “big three”: the Vladivostok New Telephone Company (owned by Korea Telecom) received 437 points, the unknown to the market Aurora Telecom - 436 points, Chelyabinsk Cellular Communication (owned by Swedish Tele2) - 428 points

The contests took into account such factors as a set of licenses for communication services, the duration of work in the telecommunications market, etc. As a result, the victory of the "big three" was initially predictable. True, until the last moment there was one intrigue: would VimpelCom get the 3G license, known for its tense relations with regulators ? It is no coincidence that its general director Alexander Izosimov publicly stated that “we are more than happy to win”. However, as already noted, VimpelCom got the least cleared frequencies.

Even before the start of contests with the distribution of 3G frequencies, there was a scandal: one of the largest regional cellular operators, SMARTS, was dismissed from participation in the competition, which already disputes this decision in court . The reason was the debt of SMARTS to the tax authorities, although similar proceedings with the tax authorities are also taking place at VimpelCom and MTS. And during the announcement of the results of the contests, the chairman of the competition commission, Alexander Krupnov, said that one of the losing companies was trying to carry out individual work with the commission members. He did not specify what kind of company this is, but Alexander Savelyev, the chairman of the legal center of the International Bar Association, is sure that the talk was about SMARTS, "whose leadership is known for its assertive nature."

There should be another contest for frequencies of 2.1 GHz ahead, but we also predict the winner there. This is the CDMA "Sky Link" cellular operator, which already has these frequencies at its disposal for the purposes of conditional commercial operation.
