For many years, automakers have achieved the quietest possible engine operation. Now they have to solve the opposite problem.
Electric vehicle operation that is too quiet causes concern to traffic safety experts. In the US, they propose at the legislative level (see
The Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act ) to oblige manufacturers to put the speakers so that cars move at low speeds make a sound of the motor (when driving at high speed there is little sense in this, because there is no difference to the car before dying or not). At the same time, no one discusses how exactly the sound should be. That is, a fake engine can sound like anything, so that manufacturers came to the point with imagination,
writes the NY Times.
For example, the developers of the new hybrid car Fisker Karma, which will be available next year, have provided the car with a futuristic sound, something average between the sound of a spaceship and a Formula 1 car.
The company Nissan
invited experts from Hollywood to equip the new Leaf hybrid with the sound of a car from the cult film "Blade Runner".

BMW has not yet decided on the sound of the future hybrid, as an option they plan to make a whole set to the choice of the driver. Perhaps the new sounds for BMW can be downloaded as ringtones from the Internet.
