BSkyB launches rival iTunes and Spotify

On October 19, the British media group BSkyB launches the Sky Songs music service, which they believe will become a serious competitor for both the giant iTunes and the small Spotify.

More than 4 million tracks will be available on the site for both online listening and downloading. The catalog will include all the existing and new releases of the big four: EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner, as well as a number of independent labels and distributors.

Unlike the business model of iTunes (sale of individual tracks), the new service will offer a monthly subscription fee to the entire catalog at once. The music-for-advertising advertising model, which is used by the Spotify service, is also not provided.
