The company LG Display has developed a solar panel for use in electronic readers. The 10 by 10 cm plate, a millimeter thick and 20 grams of weight, was integrated into the Sony Reader as a demonstration. A prototype will be shown next week at an International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) event.
E-books and so can boast a long life without recharging the batteries. Still, updating the e-ink display is not supporting the operation of a 3-inch LCD. But, given that new readers are overgrown with additional functions and modules (audio playback, touchscreens, wireless), the possibility of extending work without recharging does not hurt. A new solar battery will extend it for a considerable period of time, since 4-5 hours of the book being in the sun will give it the opportunity to work for a day.
So far, the efficiency of the panel used in the prototype is only 9.6%. However, LG is going to increase it to 12% next year and to 14% by 2012, when the product will be commercialized. ')
