How dangerous are home robots?

Usually the question “What happens if robots rebel against humans?” Low-cost science fiction films begin, but if you follow the logic of researchers at Washington University, there is a rational grain in the inspirational phrases of popular science trash. Home robots gained popularity a few years ago - first as toys, then as housekeepers, such as RoomRobot's robot vacuum cleaner. Today, the results of a study of the safety of home robots, conducted by a team of Washington University, were published. Erector Spykee, RoboSapien and Rovio machines were used as test subjects. The main conclusion of the scientific work is that very little attention is paid to the design of robots.

“We were shocked at how easy it is to gain access to robot control,” said Tadaesi Kono, an associate professor at the University of Washington, one of the authors of the research paper. as in "Terminator". They are afraid of something else: hackers do not need to learn how to control home robots. Modern robots, in fact, are wireless access points, so a nearby attacker can easily enter the program of such a robot. Rovio-type machines are controlled via the Internet, and if the hacker manages to steal the login and password of the robot owner, the fraudster can easily turn the robot into a remote-controlled spy.

“Users should know that their home helpers can become the eyes and ears of intruders in their own home. Robots are the same computers,” other research authors say. The more difficult the robots are, the more opportunities hackers have to use them for their own gain. Designers can even be unaware of such “holes” in the program when developing machines. The study addresses the problems of “vandalism of robots” (even weak robots can push something fragile from the stairs) and “suicide of robots”. It is also noted that robots can be used to listen to conversations and intimidate children.

Of course, the devil is not so terrible as he is painted, but it is better for robot manufacturers to take everything into account from the very beginning than they will bother with cars that have gone crazy.
