1 terabit per square inch

TDK has broken its own record of recording density on magnetic plates. New result - more than 1 terabit per square inch.

The Japanese managed to achieve such a recording density using information recording technology with local heating of a magnetic plate (heat-assisted recording). For heating only the desired (and extremely small) area of the magnetic plate, without affecting the neighboring areas, the laser responds. Its TDK characteristics, unfortunately, are kept secret.

The new technology without problems will allow creating HDD of record volumes without “knocking out” beyond the usual 3.5-inch form factor and without changing the rotation speed (7200 rpm).

The appearance of the first hard drives with similar improvements can be expected no earlier than 2011. Accordingly, even their approximate price is not yet known.
