Yota is testing Mobile WiMAX Release 2.0 technology

Yota, together with its partner, Samsung Electronics, has begun testing the next version of Mobile WiMAX technology - Release 2.0 (IEEE 802.16m standard).
The 802.16m standard is a 2.0 release of Mobile WiMAX mobile broadband technology. It is considered the most likely candidate among all the communication technologies of the so-called IMT-Advanced generation (advanced IMT-2000) for the status of a new standard for commercial use. The data transfer rate in Mobile WiMAX Release 2.0 networks is more than 4 times higher than in networks using the current Mobile WiMAX technology (802.16e). This is achieved using the Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple User Output (MIMO) solution, which improves the efficiency of using the frequency range. 802.16m is expected to have better performance than the 3GPP LTE standard.

Mobile WiMAX Release 2.0 provides full backward compatibility with Mobile WiMAX Release 1.0 (802.16e) solutions. Due to this, the current Mobile WiMAX operators can easily switch to the 802.16m technology, updating a part of the modules on the motherboards and software of their base stations. The current Mobile WiMAX Release 1.0 subscriber devices are also fully compatible with base stations that will be developed in the future.

As members of the board of directors of the WiMAX Forum standardizing organization and the leaders of the Mobile WiMAX industry (in the development of technology and commercial operation of networks based on it), Yota and Samsung play an important role in creating the Mobile WiMAX Release 2.0 technological specifications and promoting it worldwide. At the international exhibition ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva, Samsung’s 802.16m solution will be demonstrated in action. For this purpose, Samsung U-RAS Flexible base stations with updated modules, the existing Mobile WiMAX subscriber device and a prototype of a new device developed for Mobile WiMAX Release 2.0 will be used. The purpose of the demonstration is to show full backward compatibility between Mobile WiMAX Release 2.0 (802.16m) and Mobile WiMAX Release 1.0 (802.16e) technologies.

“The new version of Mobile WiMAX - Release 2.0 is a logical technological evolution of the standard and the possibilities for developing new online multimedia services,” said Yota CEO Denis Sverdlov. - Many Yota customers, for example, are actively watching videos over the 4G Internet. But now an HD-quality film needs to be pre-downloaded, and with the help of WiMAX 802.16m technology it can be watched online on a large TV. This is just one example, and, in addition to online HD, there will be completely new services that are now difficult to present not only to users, but also to the developers themselves. In addition, the capacity of new base stations is many times larger, and we will be able to provide services to a larger number of clients with the same number of base stations. And in order to offer new solutions tomorrow, efforts must be made today. ”

It is planned that the first in the world technical solution Mobile WiMAX Release 2.0 from Samsung, the company Yota will install into its network by the end of 2010. Yota was one of the first in the world to launch the Mobile WiMAX network (in Moscow, St. Petersburg) into commercial operation. The Yota company builds Mobile WiMAX networks in other Russian cities and in other countries. Together with WiMAX-operators Clearwire (USA) and UQ Communications (Japan), Yota has begun to create international WiMAX-roaming.
