Google requires Microsoft to support SVG and Canvas

As you know, this year, Google decided to host the SVG Open 2009 conference right on its own campus. Thus, Google emphasizes its full support for the open standard SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), which they want to promote everywhere.

Brad Neuberg spoke at Google on behalf of Google. He said that SVG is a special format that is loved by developers. In this sense, it is difficult to compare it with something, so web developers love SVG. The market clearly requires the implementation of this standard, said Neuberg. These his words are confirmed by the results of a survey of web developers, where vector graphics topped the list of the three dozen of the most popular features.

The problem is, Neuberg said that the SVG format lacks native support in the IE browser, so developers have to work through the Google SVG Web library. The capabilities of this library are limited, and it will always be slower than the native support in the browser.

Brad Neuberg also said that two Microsoft representatives, including IE architect Ted Johnson, honored the event, but they refrained from making any statements and said they only came to the conference to listen.

The technical director of the Wikimedia Foundation also spoke in favor of native support for SVG in the IE browser, since on the Wikipedia site the SVG format is generally the standard for illustrations.

Neuberg also mentioned the Canvas tag (from the HTML 5 set) for 2D graphics, which Google is also going to promote in all possible ways. Together with SVG, they complement each other well.
