At the end of August, AUO
was going to increase production of electronic book displays by half. The news of the hype, of course, did not cause. However, it was the increase in production, along with other factors, allowed the same
AUO to make another statement. At this time, the company claims that soon the cost of e-books based on e-ink displays will fall to $ 100.
Price cuts will not be instant. So, according to the forecasts of specialists of AUO, readers should fall in price to $ 150 in a year, and in 2011 the most attractive $ 100 will cost at all. The manufacturer took such numbers, of course, not from the ceiling. Firstly, the cost of manufacturing displays for readers should be reduced by optimizing the production process of AUO itself. Secondly, the company is going to become a leader in the production of such displays by signing contracts with the manufacturers of the readers themselves, in particular, Amazon and Sony. Accordingly, with cheap AUO displays, the Kindle and Sony Reader readers can easily drop in price.
The rosy forecasts of AUO are, of course, wonderful. If they come true, I personally will only be glad. Still, a $ 100 reader is much more interesting than a $ 300-400 equivalent. But there is one nuance. The term of dreaming and implementation of this “pitchfork-by-water-forecast” is at least two years. Do you need, given the development trends of the same tablets and, say, an increase in the diagonal of the display in smartphones and communicators, someone in 2011 will be just a reader?
