After eight years of happy life, the USB 2.0 standard begins to move to another world. This process will be long and gradual, but the end will inevitably come.
The Dutch company Freecom has
announced the world's first hard drive for the mass market, based on the new “super-fast” USB 3.0 standard. As you know, the new standard tenfold increases the maximum theoretical data transfer rate on the bus from the current 480 Mbit / s right up to 4.8 Gbit / s. True, the real data transfer speed in the new HDD Freecom XS 3.0 will be “only” 130 MB / s, but even this is much higher than we are used to now. For example, a standard 1.4-gigabyte movie will be copied in less than 11 seconds.
The package of the hard drive includes drivers for Vista and XP, but in Windows 7, USB 3.0 support is native, that is, the HDD is automatically recognized. There are no drivers for Mac OS yet, unfortunately.

The start of sales is scheduled for mid-November 2009. 1 TB, 1.5 TB and 2 TB models will be launched on the market starting at € 119. True, this price does not include a mandatory PCI controller that provides support for USB 3.0 on the desktop, worth € 26. Owners of laptops for the same purpose can buy a PC Card for € 30.
