Ancient Domains of Mystery

Recent articles about NetHack on Habré led me to write a short review of another roguelike - ADOM .

')
Unlike NetHack , ADOM is a closed code game. For this reason, it has only one kind of interface (ASCII), and a slightly limited number of supported operating systems. On the other hand, no one knows to the end what Thomas Biskup has programmed there, so playing is more fun.

ADOM is not limited to dungeons, a fairly wide area with forests, fields, swamps and even a river is available for research.

ADOM plot is tied to the forces of Chaos, burst into the world. By his own efforts, the player can save the inhabitants of Drakalor Chain. Or conquer. Or even go about their business - there are several endings in the game, although the most popular one begins with the words "You die ...".

In addition to randomly generated dungeons, there are many locations in ADOM with their own special rules. Villages, underwater caves, mystical temples, forgotten libraries ...

The basis of roguelike is, of course, underground locations, each of which is unique and inimitable. There are places in ADOM where the way back will not be the same as the way forward. Thus, in the Infinite Dungeon, each transition to the stairs leads the player to a new random location. The only reference point in the ID is the depth counter (they say that the ID is pulled down right up to UINT32_MAX).

There are many different guides written by ADOM (I especially recommend this one ), where a lot of questions have been considered. Since even reverse engineering of a binary does not answer some questions (for example, about the location of the Almighty Scroll), the player will meet many unexpected things in his path.

ADOM is very loyal to beginners, as there are locations for unprepared characters near the starting point. But do not forget, stupid death awaits you around every corner!

One of the most difficult moments in roguelike is the sheer number of keyboard shortcuts. I advise you to print a help list from the certificate and not to take it far from yourself in the first days of the game.

Currently ADOM author, Thomas Biskup, is working on a new version of ADOM - JADE. Many new tasty buns and plans, but so far no public release. But the classic ADOM will give you a lot of pleasant moments, so download the archive and go on a walk through the Drakalor Chain. And may good luck and friendly RNG be with you! :)
