In 1999, the company OpenCola was established in Toronto. Its creators were engaged in open source software. The company name was decoded as Open Collaboration Object Lookup Architecture. But the company is not widely known because of its software products.
Developers from OpenCola have come up with a very original marketing ploy to attract customers. OpenCola carbonated drink was a promotional tool for explaining the terms free and open source software. The company posted a recipe for their drink on the site and after some time it turned out that the majority of visitors come to buy a drink, or in search of a recipe that was distributed under the GPL license. During the existence of the company has sold 150 thousand cans. In 2003, the company OpenCola was sold and the sale of the drink was stopped, but the recipe can now be found on the Internet.

The project was created by the joint efforts of art-association Supaflex and students of IT University in Copenhagen as confirmation that the open source model is applicable not only to software, but also to quite traditional products. The recipe was published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license (with copyleft authorship). Beer Free Beer brewed according to classical traditions, but with the addition of guarana. Currently version 3.3 is relevant. more information can be found at freebeer.org
