Japan announced the launch of a project on the construction in space of a gigawatt solar power plant with a total area of 4 km 2 .
To participate in the project worth $ 21 billion, Mitsubishi Electric and IHI corporations (an engineering company specializing in industrial design) have been contracted. For four years, they are obliged to develop and design specific devices for transporting panels to a stationary orbit of 36,000 km, assembling panels and transmitting electricity to Earth with minimal losses. ')
The first experiment on the transfer of electricity from orbit is planned to be held in 2015, and the final commissioning of the system is scheduled for 2030. The power plant must last at least 30 years.
