Multitouch revolution with Atmel maXTouch

Atmel introduced a new series of touch screen controllers. The development, called maXTouch , is unique. The fact is that this controller supports an unlimited number of separate and simultaneous clicks and at the same time is capable of updating the screen with a frequency of 250 Hz.

In addition, the maXTouch may well allow you to do touchscreens larger than 10 inches with support for zoom, rotation, shape recognition and the possibility of handwriting. According to Atmel, maXTouch is also more energy efficient than previous developments in this area.

The first controller in the series - mXT224 - has 224 nodes, which allows you to track multiple clicks, and is able to redraw the screen in 4 ms. Another advantage is the integration of all components into a single chip, which minimizes the cost. By the way, for small screens, you can use one chip, for large ones - several. The manufacturer notes that the mXT224 copes with the recognition of touch as a finger or stylus, and a fingernail or gloved hand.

mXT224 is already for sale. Manufacturers of touch screens can be purchased at a price of $ 4.75 in batches of 1 million units. At the end of 2009 and in 2010, more advanced maXTouch models should enter the market.
