From the headquarters of Microsoft take the server

From the Microsoft campus in Redmond will soon take away all the servers that are now used to test the code, running new products, etc. Traditionally, this equipment stood in adjacent rooms near the developers. Dozens of such “mini-server” were scattered around the campus, but now everything will change. All the equipment will be taken to a separate data center Redmond Ridge 1, which was built twenty minutes from the headquarters (12 km along the highway). According to managers, this is the minimum distance to discourage employees from going to their servers.

Maykrosoftovtsy themselves recognize that a full transition to remote work with servers requires a "serious change in corporate culture." Some developers are literally akin to the technique, they even call the machines gentle female names.

Redmond Ridge 1 is not even a data center, it is officially called the “Research and Development Support Lab,” that is, it serves exclusively the internal needs of Microsoft. In some other details, it also differs from the usual data centers. The building is designed for 35-50 thousand servers in groups of up to 1,200 pieces (5-20 virtual servers can be launched on each of them). The construction took two and a half years, the work was completed in July. Now it works at half capacity, the rest of the servers will be delivered by the end of 2010.

From an environmental point of view (in the west now this is a popular topic), the new data center will save Microsoft about 12-24 thousand tons of carbon dioxide per year. In general, the largest IT corporation releases into the atmosphere from 900,000 to 1,000,000 tons of CO2 per year.
