Social networks Facebook and StudiVZ settled an extrajudicial plagiarism dispute. The owner of the German StudiVZ, the company Georg von Holtzbrinck, will pay Facebook a monetary compensation. The details of the agreement, as always, are not disclosed.
In 2008, Facebook sued the owners of the German social network StudiVZ in court, accusing them of plagiarism. Prior to this, Facebook for several years demanded StudiVZ to stop copying the design and functions of the site. Claims were filed in the United States, and then in Germany. Initially, Facebook accused the Germans of stealing software PHP code and page design style files (CSS). Subsequently, these charges were dropped.
The Cologne court decided the case in favor of compatriots, reproaching Facebook lawyers in a sloppy drafting of a claim. Facebook announced it wanted to challenge this decision, and the trial against StudiVZ in California continued. In the meantime, it became known that even before the filing of the claim, Facebook was trying to absorb StudiVZ, but the owners of the German social network considered the proposed amount insufficient. The lawsuit was preceded by the launch of the German-language version of the social network Facebook in March 2008.
