Do we really need a photo-realistic picture in games?

The last blog posts of the Games gave me a jolt, which was not enough for me to sit down and write this small post.

So, by realism, I mean super fancy modern graphics with models from billions of polygons and / or a kind of mechanics of the world around us. Realism in the game turns it into a simulation. Simulation of some fictional reality (do not touch such games as Sims - this is a simulation not in the sense of this statement). No, no, simulation is not bad at all. Progress in this direction someday will give us a full-fledged virtual reality indistinguishable from the real world - its simulation.

But I don't want a semblance of the real world, I already have one semblance . I want to play and get fan, moving away from real life.

The development of the gaming industry somewhere overstepped the barrier when realism ceased to create such a wow-effect. The photorealistic rendering in real time is impressive, yes, but personally I can play this toy for half an hour so much, evaluate the developers' work and the progress of modern video cards.

A great example is Team Fortress 2. An attempt to make this game (long time ago) a realistic combat command simulator (wow damn) failed even before the developers began to complicate the gameplay. And it's good that they killed this case before TF would turn into Operation Flashpoint. As a result (here I am not quite competent), another development team has already made a masterpiece from TF2.

See for yourself, although I doubt that anyone has seen what this game looks like.

Cartoon comic-like characters and the same game cards. Play incredibly fun and interesting. Delays

I like Counter-Strike 1.6

At the same time, I can't play Call of Duty

and Counter-Strike Source.

From this recent post I really liked the future toy.

Again, cartoon graphics and cartoon 3d rendering.

Even here this toy sympathizes with me.

Yes, take the same Spore.

Developers would try to introduce some photo-realistic creatures, I’m sure it would be a failure.

Or World of Warcraft.

He is, of course, an old man. But such minimalist cartoon graphics proved its worth. And it's not just that 10 well-traced characters in an MMO lower the FPS to 5 (hello, Age of Conan). Somehow it attracts by the fact that it is a GAME, and not a simulation of some kind of virtual world (which wow is actually).

After analyzing all of the above, I can only add that in many games from realness only worse. Realism of the picture brings with it increased detailing, many small elements that prevent to concentrate on the main thing. Why, for example, in Diablo 2/3 monsters stand out so when you hover on them?

Not so long ago, I don’t remember what kind of game was the conversation (I was a bit behind the mainstream gaming industry), but it was said that too detailed monsters were very scary (8 "There used to be more fan killing aliens when they did not explode and did not demonstrate all the details of their innards. ”What is not an argument?

I repeat, I do not want a semblance of the real world, I already have one semblance .

And you, comrades Habravchane-gamers, what do you think about this?
Or am I alone in my reasoning, but give everyone a photo-realistic picture?
Thank.

PS here I put my other thoughts and sketches about toys.
