Troubleshooting DNS in Windows 7

Foreword

In our company, for convenience of configuration and operation, we use a central server on which all working versions of projects are located. Each developer has his own folder, which he connects as a network drive. In the folder are his projects. All directories from it are automatically added as subdomains. Until recently, in order to get via HTTP to the working version of the site, it was necessary to introduce something like the following:

  http://project.user.company.com

But, over time, I was tired of typing long URLs and it was decided to set everything up so that it could be used:

  http: //project.user

To do this, small adjustments were made on the server, and on client machines it was necessary to enable the automatic addition of a DNS suffix or add company.com to the list of suffixes, which was done. After that, everything worked and everyone became happy. All except those who had Windows 7.

The essence of the problem

In Windows Vista and above, there is one unpleasant thing. If there is a period in the domain name, then for some reason the suffix is not added. I.e:

ping user – user.company.com

ping project.user –

They say that this is a bug. Microsoft even announced that it fixed it in Vista SP2, if I'm not mistaken, but, as we see, it exists.

Solution to the problem

1. Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc

2. Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> DNS Client

3. Include the following parameters:

- Allow DNS suffixes to be added to requests for inappropriate compound names.

- Primary DNS Suffix Devolution Level.

After doing these shamanic actions, everything magically worked. I hope the note will be useful to someone.
