AMD six-core dragon in 2010

Just the other day, the AMD family of productive processors has been extended with a new six-core chip. And after that, the company announced preparations for the release of Thuban (dragon, in Arabic) - six-core for the desktop PC segment, which will be executed just on the basis of the “servers” Istanbul.

Thuban will be compatible with the AM3 platform, and maybe with AM2 +. Declared an integrated dual-channel memory controller (DDR3 1333 MHz - with a bang), 3 MB L2 cache (6 x 512 KB) and 6 MB L3 cache. For the production will be used 45 nm process technology.

Presumably Thuban will enter the new family of processors - AMD Leo. This platform is based on AMD 890FX and 890GX chipsets, and should appear no earlier than April-May 2010. Accordingly, Thuban does not have to wait before the third or fourth quarter of next year. However, Intel has scheduled the release of its six core Gulftown in the second quarter of 2010, so AMD may well scratch it, postponing the release date for a couple of months.
