Microsoft and Intel are related again

Microsoft and Intel have been working in tandem for many years, but now their cooperation has reached its apogee, writes VentureBeat . For the past few years, Intel engineers have worked hard at the Microsoft offices in Redmond. They were given the task: to prevent the repetition of the shame that had to be experienced after the release of Vista, which is extremely buggy and inhibited.

The joint collaboration resulted in dramatic improvements in OS performance, including a record download speed of 11 seconds. Yesterday the newly formed cartel “Wintel” held a joint press conference. Naturally, they did not mention the dumping, the killing of competitors and the pressure on OEM-assemblers. It was about specific features that Intel and Microsoft engineers did together.

Most importantly, Windows 7 is optimized for multi-core processors. The system has learned how to correctly parallelize tasks, while loading the initialization of the drivers goes on several threads at the same time. The aforementioned speed of 11 s is achieved on a Nehalem quad-core processor with eight working threads.

If the load on the CPU is small, then the system completely disables unnecessary cores to save energy. What is very important, a new concept of timers is implemented, according to which the sleeping CPU wakes up on a timer, checks the situation (whether new WiFi networks have appeared, for example), finds nothing, falls asleep again. The timer coalescing stack has significantly reduced the sleep load on the CPU, since the timers alone do not bother him anymore. As a result, the Lenovo T400 laptop consumes only 15.6 watts while watching a DVD, whereas under Vista it ate 20.5 watts.

In Windows 7, support for a specific cryptographic module was pre-built, which will appear only on the future Intel Westmere platform (Clarkdale processors). When it comes out, under Windows it will be able to generate 256-bit ciphers ten times faster than processors of previous generations.
