So 10 years flew by! And on August 31 of the distant 1999 (a press release for particularly nostalgic) was released Adobe InDesign 1.0. Adobe had PageMaker at that time in a rather neglected state, and a competitor standing confidently on its feet in the face of QuarkXPress 4.11. Nevertheless, the first version of the new layout system was released, which included the most advanced functions at that time:
multi-line text composer
optical alignment of elements on text borders
optical kerning
inherited master pages
high resolution preview
multiple undo
multilingual support
I agree with Rufus Deuchler , and I quickly lost interest in a rather raw program. And only from the release of the version of InDesign 2.0, September 24, 2001, I finally switched to a new platform. Table support is not yet flexible, but not so poor as in XPress 5.0, support for files containing transparency, etc. And constant innovations from version to version. If frankly, in my opinion, InDesign is almost the only program from Adobe for the last 5-8 years, which is really developing, and does not overgrow with “decorations” and “marketing features”.
